The Jinnah Institute of Cardiology in Lahore was renamed the Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases a few days ago by the Punjab government. Following cabinet approval, this modification was implemented. Khawaja Salman Rafique, the Punjab Health Minister, claims that the hospital is no longer affiliated with Jinnah Hospital and is now independent, with its own governing board.
Although modernizing hospitals and enhancing healthcare is a positive step, renaming such a renowned organization is not the best course of action. In Pakistan's history, the name "Jinnah" is very significant. The nation's founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, sacrificed everything for this nation. He remained steadfast in his support of Pakistan even in his final days.
It seems disrespectful to rename institutions that bear his name. These locations are more than just structures; they stand for pride in the country, history, and ideals. Politically motivated name changes convey the wrong message to the public, particularly to the younger generation, which needs to understand and honor the sacrifices made by our founders.

What will happen if this keeps up? Will the images of Quaid-e-Azam be replaced by those of politicians on our currency? That would be going too far.
To preserve our legacy, we as citizens need to speak up. Politics should not overshadow the nation's founder. One small way to honor the man who made Pakistan possible is to keep his name on national institutions.
